It Took Two Years to “Suddenly” Change Our Lives
Spoiler: it wasn’t overnight. It was a hundred tiny decisions.
Written by Matt & Linda (empty nesters with a Wi-Fi addiction and a refusal to live on autopilot)
People love a good “overnight success” story.
You know the kind:
One day you’re living the keeping-up-with-the-Joneses version of success…
and the next day you’re selling your house, tossing half your belongings into the abyss, and posting beach sunsets with captions like “We chose freedom.”
Yeah… no.
That’s not what happened.
What happened was two years of small decisions that looked boring from the outside and felt inconvenient on the inside.
Two years of slowly realizing that we weren’t tired… we were just living on autopilot.
We weren’t burned out.
We were boxed in.
We had a good life. A responsible life. A life that looked great on paper.
But it didn’t feel like freedom.
It felt like we were working nonstop just to maintain a version of success we didn’t even choose.
And once you see that, it’s kind of hard to go back to pretending you don’t.
So no, we didn’t wake up one day and “suddenly” change our lives.
We built a bridge. One tiny decision at a time.
If you’re new here, our Start Here page is the quickest way to catch up on our origin story.
The Highlight Reel Version (What People Think Happened)
Here’s the version people see:
We decided we wanted a different life.
So we sold the house.
Downsized.
Got rid of a bunch of stuff.
And started traveling.
And yes… that part is true.
But it’s also the final chapter, not the beginning.
Because long before we sold anything, we made the decision that actually mattered most:
We changed our mindset.
We set an intention.
And then we started making small choices that matched that intention, even when nobody else could see what we were doing.
The Two-Year Part No One Saw
The first small change wasn’t decluttering.
It wasn’t house hunting.
It wasn’t a big conversation with a whiteboard and a 5-year plan.
It was a mindset shift.
We stopped asking, “How do we maintain this life?”
And started asking, “What kind of life do we actually want?”
Once we answered that, everything else became a lot easier to evaluate.
Not easy to do… But easier to decide.
And the biggest shift of all was this:
We stopped buying stuff for a life we were leaving.
The “Hundred Tiny Decisions” That Quietly Changed Everything
This is the part nobody talks about because it’s not glamorous.
But it’s the part that actually makes the “big change” possible.
1) We stopped buying crap for the house
This was the first real bridge plank.
We stopped buying anything that we’d eventually have to get rid of anyway.
If it wasn’t going to fit in the car… we didn’t buy it.
Because we knew where we were headed.
And we refused to keep feeding a version of life we were actively trying to outgrow.
That one decision sounds small, but it changes everything.
Because when you stop accumulating… you start creating space.
2) We downsized… but not instantly
Here’s the part people skip.
We didn’t go from “big house” to “tiny apartment” overnight.
We sold two houses over time.
We went from a 3,000 square foot house to a 1,200 square foot apartment.
And when we finally left Raleigh, North Carolina…
Everything we owned fit in the car.
Read that again.
Everything we owned fit in the car.
That didn’t happen because we’re minimalist superheroes.
It happened because we made small choices for two years that made the final step possible.
3) We didn’t change careers, but we did change our plan
We already had an online business, so we didn’t need to reinvent the wheel.
But we did need to build it into something that could support the life we wanted.
So we kept working.
Matt worked two jobs while we built the online business into something sustainable. (because apparently we love a challenge).
That part doesn’t make the highlight reel.
But it’s the reason the highlight reel was even possible.
4) The hardest part wasn’t the house… it was the kids
The emotional weight wasn’t downsizing.
It was figuring out how to handle the almost-grown kids.
Because when you’re changing your life, you’re not just changing your life.
You’re changing the whole family system.
You’re changing what “normal” looks like.
And that stuff is messy.
But we kept going anyway.
Because the goal wasn’t to escape.
The goal was to build a life that actually fit.
The Moment It Became Real
People assume the moment it became real was the first beach trip.
Or the first “we’re doing it!” announcement.
Nope.
The moment it became real was when we sold the last house and moved into the apartment.
That’s the moment where you can’t “undo it” easily.
That’s the moment where you’re officially committed.
And in true “not as glamorous as it looks” fashion…
We still needed a storage unit.
Because even after all the intention and decluttering and downsizing…
There were still pieces of the old life we weren’t ready to fully release yet.
And honestly? That’s the point.
Bridges aren’t clean.
They’re built while you’re still figuring it out.
What People Got Wrong
Oh, people had opinions.
The biggest one?
Matt is clearly in a full midlife crisis.
They’re going off the deep end.
This is going to end badly.
(Which is hilarious… because if you’ve ever seen a real midlife crisis, you know it usually involves a sports car, a bad haircut, and a questionable tattoo.)
What we were doing wasn’t a crisis. It was a correction.
We weren’t blowing up our lives. We were rebuilding them intentionally.
And yes, that looked extreme to people who had never questioned the default script.
But for us, it was the first time in a long time that life felt like ours again.
The Lesson (Yes, It Took Two Years)
If you’re staring at your life and thinking…
“Okay… this is fine. But is this it?”
Here’s what we want you to know:
You don’t need a blow-up. You need a bridge.
A mindset shift.
A clear intention.
A handful of small decisions that match it.
And the courage to keep choosing them even when nobody claps for you.
Because most “overnight success” stories are built exactly like this:
Quietly. Slowly. Imperfectly.
Over time.
And then one day… it looks like it happened overnight.
What would it look like if you started building your bridge?
FAQ: Building a Bridge Without Blowing Up Your Life
Do I have to sell my house to change my life?
Nope. That was our bridge, not the blueprint.
The point isn’t selling your house.
The point is choosing what matters… and building a path that supports it.
Sometimes your “bridge” looks dramatic.
Most of the time, it’s just a series of small decisions that finally add up.
What if I’m not ready for a huge change?
Perfect. You don’t need huge changes.
You need one small decision that creates space.
Start there. Then build.
And if your next step is literally just admitting, “I’m not happy on autopilot anymore”…
Congrats. That counts.
What if my life looks fine… but I still feel restless?
That’s the whole thing.
Restless doesn’t mean ungrateful.
It usually means you’ve outgrown the version of life you built before.
You don’t need to blow everything up.
You just need to start asking better questions.
How long does it take to change your life?
Longer than the highlight reel shows… and shorter than you think.
Most “sudden changes” are just a hundred tiny decisions stacked over time.
And for us?
That bridge didn’t end in a breakdown.
It ended in a packed car… and a decision we’d been building toward for years.

No 2 The Quo
Before We Had the Framework, We Had the Stories
We didn’t start No 2 The Quo with a tidy little life design model and a color-coded spreadsheet.
Shocking, I know.
We started with a few lived decisions. Big ones. Messy ones. The kind where you say, “This is probably fine,” while quietly wondering if you have lost your entire mind.
These three stories explain how we got here before we had the words Declaration of Intendependence™ to describe what we were doing.
These are the origin stories behind No 2 The Quo.
