Yes, We Really Did Pack Our Whole Life Into a Car and Leave
Written by Matt & Linda (empty nesters with a Wi-Fi addiction and a refusal to live on autopilot)
Let’s just get this out of the way right up front.
In 2019, we packed our whole life into a car, left six bins with family, and drove away from the life we had spent decades building.
No, we weren’t having a breakdown.
Yes, people definitely assumed we were.
And yes, Matt got labeled “midlife crisis” more times than we can count.
But the truth is… this wasn’t sudden. It wasn’t reckless. And it wasn’t a desperate escape from responsibility.
It was a decision we built toward for years.
We didn’t blow up our lives.
We designed a different one.
And this is the part we’ve hinted at… but haven’t fully told you yet.
The Part People Didn’t See
If you’ve read our Bridge story, you already know this wasn’t overnight.
We spent nearly two years making small, practical changes before we ever hit the road:
- downsizing
- selling stuff
- shifting our priorities
- building income that could move with us and…
- instead of feeling scared, we started feeling something way more dangerous: excited.
Most people only see the “after.”
They see the travel.
They see the freedom.
They see the highlight reel and assume we just “took off.”
But what they don’t see is the slow, intentional process that got us there.
And then one day, after all that prep…
We looked at each other and said:
Are we doing this?
And then we did.
The Great American House Sit Tour (2019)
We didn’t start with a world tour.
We started with something far less glamorous… and far more brilliant.
House sitting.
We had already been traveling, but in 2019 we committed to living differently. That meant:
- no permanent home base
- no rent or mortgage
- and a travel plan that didn’t require us to light our bank accounts on fire
So we joined a house sitting platform, started applying for sits, and built our route one home at a time.
Before we took the full leap, we did a couple of test sits close to home just to make sure we knew what we knew what to expect. Our first sit felt like we were getting away with something. Like… people really trust us with their home and their pets?
And these first few weren’t just any pets.
There were horses involved.
(That’s a story for another post.)
Once we got a few sits under our belt and finished up the preparation to leave…
We drove:
- up the East Coast
- across the Northern edge of the U.S. (where Milwaukee happened)
- across to the West Coast, house sitting along the way
- down the California coast into Baja
- then across the Southern edge to Florida
If you’re imagining this as carefree and effortless…
It wasn’t.
But it was unforgettable.
And it proved something we’d never been sure of until then:
Freedom was actually possible.
Not “someday.”
Not “after retirement.”
Now.
Caribbean Winters + Hawaii (Yes, Really)
House sitting didn’t just take us across the U.S.
It took us to places we never imagined we could spend an entire season.
We house sat for the entire winter in:
- the Caribbean
- and Hawaii
And we were still running our online business the entire time.
We weren’t on vacation.
We were living there.
Waking up in places people usually only visit for a week.
We weren’t just around locals. We were part of the neighborhood.
Stepping out onto the balcony of a house on a hill in Jamaica, feeling the breeze and looking out over the jungle.
Walking down the streets where we were staying, crossing paths with real Jamaican families, eating in tiny hut restaurants… and realizing: this is what Jamaica actually feels like.
And the spice? Genuine Jamaican spice that made us question our life choices.
Working a little.
Exploring a lot.
And realizing:
This is what life can look like.
And then… COVID
Then COVID Happened (And Our Story Got Even Weirder)
When the world shut down, travel shut down too.
And when your whole lifestyle depends on movement… that creates a small problem.
So like everyone else, we adjusted.
Except our version of “adjusting” was a little more… No 2 The Quo.
Because after COVID, we did something that still sounds insane when we say it out loud:
We bought a 44’ classic 1980 motor yacht.
And then we lived on it.
Yes, We Lived On a 44’ Boat (Florida + Marathon Key Life)
We spent seasons living on that boat along the coast of Florida and in Marathon Key.
It was:
- equal parts dreamy and chaotic
- salty, humid, beautiful, and exhausting
- and the closest thing to a floating life design experiment we’ve ever done
You learn quickly on a boat:
- what matters
- what doesn’t
- and what happens when you try to bring too much “stuff” into a small space
(Answer: it makes you hate yourself.)
Eventually, we sold the boat.
And then we did the next thing that made people think we were completely unhinged:
We went to Europe.
Europe House Sitting + 17 Countries + 3 Cruise Ships
We spent three months in Europe, house sitting and staying in Airbnbs along the way.
We lived in places like:
- London
- Nice, France
- and other cities we still don’t know how to pronounce correctly
And in the process, we visited 17 countries.
We did it with:
- planes
- lots of trains
- automobiles
- and three cruise ships, including a transatlantic cruise home
It was epic.
And also…
By the end, we were tired.
Not tired of travel exactly.
Just tired in the way you get when you’re always moving.
Always adapting.
Always saying goodbye.
Which leads to something no one talks about when they fantasize about a travel lifestyle:
The Part No One Warns You About
Travel doesn’t naturally lend itself to deep relationships.
It’s a ship passing in the night kind of life.
You meet incredible people… and then you leave.
You see beautiful places… and then you move on.
You’re constantly starting over.
And eventually, even if you’re loving the adventure, you start to realize something:
Movement alone isn’t the same as meaning.
And we started missing community.
Yes, even Matt.
(The ultra introvert Matt missed people. We know. It’s wild.)
Why We Landed in Nashville
After Europe, we came home and stopped in Nashville, Tennessee.
Partly because we were tired.
But mostly because we wanted to reconnect with our boys and be closer for a while.
Because at the end of the day…
Adventure is amazing.
But it’s not the whole point.
The whole point is building a life that fits.
And part of what matters to us is family and community.
So we stopped.
We rested.
We recalibrated.
And that pause is part of the story too.
So What Are We Actually Doing Now?
We’re building No 2 The Quo because we realized something:
People don’t just want travel tips.
They want freedom.
They want intention.
They want to stop living a life they didn’t design.
They want to feel alive again.
And we’re not here to preach hustle culture.
We’re not here to sell everything and move to Bali.
We’re not here to pretend we’ve got it all figured out.
We’re here to share the real process of:
- choosing intention over autopilot
- building meaningful work that supports your life
- and collecting adventures that prove freedom is still available
Because that’s what we’ve been doing for years.
We just didn’t realize it was something other people needed to see.
If You’re Thinking “Wait… Is This Possible For Me?”
Yes.
But probably not the way you think.
You don’t need to copy our lifestyle.
You don’t need to buy a boat.
You don’t need to live out of your car.
You just need to start building your bridge.
One plank at a time.
FAQ: The Lifestyle Reveal Edition
Did you really travel full-time without a home base?
Yes. We lived without a permanent home base for long stretches using house sitting, short-term rentals, and creative pivots (including living on a boat).
How did you afford it?
We built income that could travel with us. We also dramatically reduced costs by downsizing and using house sitting to eliminate housing expenses during many seasons.
Was it hard?
Yes. It was hard in the way meaningful things are hard. The logistics can be tiring, and the constant movement can wear on you. But it was also worth it.
Do you recommend it?
We recommend designing your life intentionally. Your version might include travel… or it might not. The point is building a life you don’t need a break from.
What’s next for you?
More Life Design. More Adventure. And a lot more honesty about what this lifestyle really looks like.
If you’ve been feeling that pull…
That “Wait… is this it?” feeling…
You’re not crazy.
You’re just ready for a new season.
And you’re in the right place.

No 2 The Quo
Before We Had the Framework, We Had the Stories
We didn’t start No 2 The Quo with a tidy little life design model and a color-coded spreadsheet.
Shocking, I know.
We started with a few lived decisions. Big ones. Messy ones. The kind where you say, “This is probably fine,” while quietly wondering if you have lost your entire mind.
These three stories explain how we got here before we had the words Declaration of Intendependence™ to describe what we were doing.
These are the origin stories behind No 2 The Quo.
