In case you missed it: Part 1: The Declaration

Most people think the first move of a big life change is dramatic.

Quit the job. Sell the house. Book the one-way ticket. Post something bold with a sunset photo and a quote that makes your aunt nervous.

That was not our first move.

Our first move was a conversation.

Actually, it was a series of conversations. The kind you have when you are not trying to be inspirational. You are trying to be honest.

Because before you can build a new life, you have to get aligned in the life you already have.

Private Alignment Comes First

Here is something we learned the hard way.

A Declaration of Intendependence does not start in public.

It starts in private.

It starts with the two of you sitting at a table, walking around the neighborhood, staring at the ceiling at 2 a.m., and saying the quiet thing out loud.

This is not it.

We do not want to keep living by default.

We want to build something different.

Not because we are bored.
Not because we are reckless.
Not because we saw someone else do it on the internet and thought, that looks fun.

Because it was true.

And we could not un-know it anymore.

We Talked Until There Was Agreement

This is the part nobody wants to hear because it sounds slow.

We did not have one magical conversation where everything clicked and the clouds parted and the angels sang the chorus of freedom.

At least, not at first.

We talked.
Then we talked again.
Then we talked some more.

And eventually, after enough honest conversations, it did happen.

Not because we forced it. Because we finally got to the place where we both felt the same truth at the same time.

We did not move forward until there was agreement.

Not polite agreement.
Not the kind where one person is nodding and secretly hoping the other person forgets about it by Thursday.

Real agreement.

The kind where you both feel it in your bones.
The kind where it gets deep inside your hearts.
The kind where, even if you get scared later, you still know.

This is ours.

Keep It in the Closest Circle

Once we were aligned, we brought it to the next closest circle.

Our immediate family.
Our boys.

Not because we needed their permission.
Because we needed their understanding.

We wanted them to know what we were building and why. We wanted them to hear it from us, clearly, without panic, without drama, without a half-baked explanation that leaves room for everyone to imagine the worst.

When you love people, you do not drop a life change on them like a surprise grenade.

You invite them into the truth, early enough that it feels like family, not a press release.

Do Not Announce Your Intention Before It Is Anchored

This part matters, so let us say it plainly.

Nothing kills an intention faster than speaking it out loud before it is anchored.

When you share it too early, you hand your fresh intention to people who did not live the conversations that formed it.

They do what humans do.

They worry.
They question.
They project.
They tell you about their cousin who tried something similar and failed.
They remind you of all the reasons it is hard.

Sometimes they are trying to protect you.

Sometimes they are trying to protect themselves from the discomfort of watching you change.

Either way, if your intention is not rooted yet, it is easy to get talked out of it.

The Clarity Test

Here is the test we use now.

If you cannot feel it deep in your bones yet, keep it private.

That does not mean you have every detail.

It means your intention is real enough that your words do not wobble. It means it has weight. It means you are not borrowing confidence from the person you are telling.

You are speaking from something you already know.

The Tenacity Test

And here is the second test, the one that saves you from living somebody else’s life.

If you can be talked out of it, do not do it yet.

Or not at all.

Because sometimes we are not trying to live our Intendependence.

We are trying to live someone else’s.

We are trying to borrow a dream that looks good from the outside, but does not fit on the inside.

If an intention keeps collapsing under mild pushback, it is not always because you are weak.

Sometimes it is because it is not yours.

When it is yours, you can still be scared, but you cannot be un-convinced.

We Knew

For us, this part was clear.

We knew we were going to travel full time.
We knew we were going to do work that made that possible.

Not because it sounded cool.
Because it matched who we were becoming.

Private alignment did not make the whole plan easy.

It made the intention real.

Communicate First. Take Small Steps Next.

Matt & Linda walking away holding hands on a quiet street.

Private alignment did not make the whole plan easy.

It made the intention real.

And once it was real, we could finally move without wobbling.

Not viral steps.
Not dramatic steps.

Unsexy steps.

Practical yes/no decisions that looked boring to anyone who did not know what we were building.

And that is exactly how a bridge gets built.

One plank at a time.

Once we knew what we were building, a lot of decisions got simple.

Thanks for coming along for the ride.
With love and laughter,
Matt & Linda

“The Unsexy Decisions That Made the Whole Thing Real”

The small decisions that make intentional change real.

Before We Had the Framework, We Had the Stories

We didn’t start No 2 The Quo with a tidy little life design model and a color-coded spreadsheet.

Shocking, I know.

We started with a few lived decisions. Big ones. Messy ones. The kind where you say, “This is probably fine,” while quietly wondering if you have lost your entire mind.

These three stories explain how we got here before we had the words Declaration of Intendependence™ to describe what we were doing.

These are the origin stories behind No 2 The Quo.
