How to Eat a Cream Puff Properly
How to Eat a Cream Puff Properly in Milwaukee

If you’ve never been to the Wisconsin State Fair, let me paint you a picture.
You’re surrounded by the familiar scents of grilled sausages, deep-fried everything, and (of course) the occasional whiff of livestock…
…and then you see it.
The world-famous Cream Puff Building.
This is no ordinary structure. It’s practically a shrine. A temple of whipped cream and pastry. A sacred place where diets go to die and taste buds ascend to a higher plane of existence.
The line stretches out like a conga line of the hopeful and the hungry… and I can’t help but join it, feeling equal parts excitement and mild panic.
What if they run out before it’s MY turn?
These Aren’t Just Desserts
As I edge closer, I catch my first glimpse of the cream puffs themselves.
And holy cow (probably the same one that provided the cream)… they’re MASSIVE.
These aren’t just desserts. They’re architectural feats. Towering mounds of pastry and cream that look like they could double as:
- emergency flotation devices
- a very irresponsible pillow
- or an edible trophy for surviving adulthood
They’re golden-brown, perfectly flaky pastry shells stuffed with what can only be described as a mountain of whipped cream.
It’s like someone took the essence of happiness and decided to sandwich it between two pieces of dough.
I could already tell this was going to be an experience.
Finally… It’s My Turn
After what feels like an eternity (and several nervous glances at the shrinking pile of cream puffs), it’s finally my turn.
The server hands me one of these behemoths with a grin that says, “Good luck.”
I cradle it in both hands. It’s that big.
And I just stare at it for a moment like it’s a newborn.
This thing is the lovechild of a doughnut and a cloud… and I’m about to make it disappear.
The First Bite
I take my first bite and immediately… everything else in the world fades away.
The pastry is crisp on the outside but tender enough to melt in my mouth, crumbling just enough to destroy my shirt, but not enough to stop me.
It’s like biting into a cloud… only this cloud is made of pure joy and maybe a little magic.
And the cream?
The cream is thick and luscious, with just the right amount of sweetness, and it somehow multiplies as I chew, oozing out from every possible angle.
I’m pretty sure I had whipped cream on my nose, my chin, and maybe even behind my ears… but I didn’t care.
I was too busy being in dessert heaven.

Quick Tips (Before You Dive In)
- Go early if you want shorter lines and a fresher cream puff.
- Bring napkins. Or a full towel. You’ll understand soon.
- Eat it over the plate. This is not a “walk-and-eat” situation.
- Start from the top and work your way down.
- Don’t fight the powdered sugar. Accept it. It’s part of the experience.
How to Eat a Cream Puff Properly (Yes, There’s a Method)
If you want to eat one like a seasoned Wisconsin State Fair pro, here’s the highly scientific method:
✅ Step 1: Accept that you will not stay clean
This is not a tidy dessert. It’s an experience.
✅ Step 2: Use both hands
One hand is a rookie move. Two hands is survival.
✅ Step 3: Lean forward slightly
This reduces collateral damage. Slightly.
✅ Step 4: Eat the top first
Start with the pastry top and a little cream so you don’t trigger a whipped cream avalanche.
✅ Step 5: Embrace the chaos
You’re going to end up with cream on your shirt. This is part of the Wisconsin State Fair oath.
The Aftermath
With each bite, I felt a mixture of bliss and panic.
Bliss because it was just so darn good.
Panic because I knew it would eventually be gone.
The last bite was bittersweet, literally and figuratively, as I finished it off and looked down at my hands… now a mess of crumbs and cream.
I had cream puff in my hair, on my shirt, and possibly down my back… but you know what?
I’d do it again in a heartbeat.
By the time I finished, I looked like I had lost a whipped cream fight, but the smile on my face said it all.
I just had a Wisconsin cream puff… and nothing else will ever compare.
Sure, I might have to take a nap after this.
And yes, I’ll be finding crumbs for days.
But it’s all worth it.
I’ve joined the ranks of the cream puff elite… and my only regret is that I didn’t get a second one.
(…yet.)
As I walked away from the cream puff building, feeling like I’d just conquered a delicious mountain, I couldn’t stop smiling.
I knew one thing for sure:
I’d be dreaming of that cream puff for weeks… and I’ll definitely be back next year for round two.
Because once you’ve had a Wisconsin cream puff, no other dessert can ever really compare.
And honestly… who needs a clean shirt when you’ve got a story like this?
No 2 The Quo Note:
Sometimes saying “yes” to joy is as simple as taking a detour, trying something ridiculous, and letting life get a little messy. Cream puff crumbs included.
Helmets optional. Detours allowed. Autopilot disengaged.
Thanks for coming along for the ride.
With love and laughter,
Matt & Linda

Before We Had the Framework, We Had the Stories
We didn’t start No 2 The Quo with a tidy little life design model and a color-coded spreadsheet.
Shocking, I know.
We started with a few lived decisions. Big ones. Messy ones. The kind where you say, “This is probably fine,” while quietly wondering if you have lost your entire mind.
These three stories explain how we got here before we had the words Declaration of Intendependence™ to describe what we were doing.
These are the origin stories behind No 2 The Quo.
