The #1 Can’t-Miss Summer Place to Visit in America: Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Milwaukee: Where Surprises and Fun Await!

Written by Matt (chief adventure tester)

Milwaukee?!
We couldn’t believe it either when our travel plans pointed us toward this unsuspecting gem in Wisconsin.

But oh… what a ride it turned out to be.

If you’re planning a Milwaukee summer trip, this is our quick-hit guide to what we’d do again.

Picture this:

  • a summer filled with German Fest shenanigans
  • dachshund derbies
  • state fair spectacles
  • a bronze Fonz
  • and a frothy adventure through the Miller Brewing Company

All in one quirky, unexpected city.

A Surprise Stop That Became a Highlight

Our journey to Milwaukee happened almost by accident.

We were en route to Denver when fate whispered, “Stop over in Milwaukee.”
And honestly? We’re so glad we listened.

Milwaukee turned out to be one of those places that completely surprises you — in the best way.

Best Things to Do in Milwaukee in Summer

If you’re planning a Milwaukee summer trip, here are the highlights we’d do again in a heartbeat:

  • Walk the RiverWalk (and stop for photos at the Bronze Fonz)
  • Hit German Fest on the lakefront (beer + music + vibes)
  • Go to the Wisconsin State Fair (yes, for the cream puff)
    • This State Fair has a street that feels just like Broadway in Nashville (Bars with live music)
  • Explore the Third Ward for food, coffee, and local shops
  • Take in Lake Michigan views and just… breathe

If you only have one day, do the RiverWalk + Third Ward + lakefront festival.
If you have a weekend, add the State Fair

When is the best time to visit Milwaukee?

Summer is peak season for Milwaukee, especially if you want festivals, patios, and lakefront weather. Almost every park in the city has a Beer Garden, so you can stay hydrated wherever you go. We visited during German Fest and the State Fair, and it felt like the city was fully alive.

(We’re not saying you should plan your route around it…
but we’re also not not saying that.)

German Fest: Where It All Began

German Fest was our gateway drug into Milwaukee’s madness.
And no, you don’t need a drop of German blood to love it.

There were:

  • Dachshund races (yes, really)
  • TimberSports showdowns
  • Oompah bands
  • And enough beer to test the limits of our stein-holding abilities

Let’s Talk About the Dachshunds

Who knew those little sausage dogs could move like Usain Bolt?

Not us.

Until we watched them tear up the track with their tiny legs flying, surrounded by cheering crowds and beer-holding spectators. It was chaotic, adorable, and absolutely unforgettable.

But German Fest wasn’t just about dachshunds.

There was bratwurst, schnitzel, pretzels, polka bands, folk dancing, yodeling contests, and Bavarian games we absolutely should not have attempted after a few beers.

The Wisconsin State Fair (On Steroids)

Then came the Wisconsin State Fair — and let us be clear:

This is not your average fair.

This thing felt like a full-blown city, complete with permanent buildings turned into bars and live music venues that rival Broadway in Nashville.

Forget cotton candy and funnel cakes.

At the Wisconsin State Fair, it’s all about:

  • deep-fried cheese curds
  • ice-cold beer

and, eventually…

  • the Cream Puff Factory

Just when you think you’ve reached peak dairy consumption, Milwaukee says,
“Hold my beer.”

The Bronze Fonz (Yes, That Fonz)

And then… the pièce de résistance.

The Bronze Fonz.

A life-size statue of The Fonz, immortalized in bronze, leather jacket and all.

You’ll find him along the east side of the Riverwalk, near the north end — although “find” might be generous.

Tracking him down felt like a scavenger hunt filled with false leads and mild confusion.

And when we finally spotted him?

We laughed out loud.

Turns out… the Fonz is a lot smaller in person.
(Who knew leather jackets could shrink?)

Why Milwaukee Belongs on Your Summer List

(Because it doesn’t belong on your winter list.)

Before We Had the Framework, We Had the Stories

We didn’t start No 2 The Quo with a tidy little life design model and a color-coded spreadsheet.

Shocking, I know.

We started with a few lived decisions. Big ones. Messy ones. The kind where you say, “This is probably fine,” while quietly wondering if you have lost your entire mind.
